Announcement Eggy Arcade coming September 30th

Eggy Arcade is coming September 30th

Eggy Arcade brings a full browser based arcade into XenForo, with a proper game catalogue, achievements, activity based rankings, player profiles, Arcade statistics, provider importing, configurable widgets and ACP controls built around XenForo itself.

You can already try the live demo here:

https://eggy.net/arcade

The idea is to give site owners something that is easy to run without turning the arcade into another system they have to constantly maintain.

Games can be imported from supported providers, categories can be created automatically, scheduled imports can keep the catalogue growing and the public Arcade handles the rest.

One important thing to be aware of is that games supplied by third party distribution providers may display their own advertising during gameplay. Those adverts are served by the game provider or distributor and are not injected or controlled by Eggy Arcade.

What’s included

  • Browser based Arcade games
  • Large searchable game catalogue
  • Automatic game importing
  • Automatic category creation
  • Scheduled provider imports
  • Arcade achievements
  • Activity based Arcade rankings
  • Arcade Points
  • Player Arcade profiles
  • Personal Arcade statistics
  • Play history and recent games
  • Favourites
  • Popular and newly added games
  • Configurable XenForo widgets
  • Per widget page placement controls
  • Native XenForo permissions
  • Responsive game pages
  • Fullscreen game mode
  • XenForo integration throughout

The Arcade homepage

The Arcade homepage is designed around actually finding and playing games rather than simply dumping thousands of titles onto one page.

Members can:
  • Search the game catalogue
  • Filter by category
  • Browse newly added games
  • See popular games
  • Open games directly from their cards
  • Load more games without traditional page after page navigation
The catalogue uses a Load more games system so additional games are added to the existing list instead of replacing the games already on screen.

The homepage also gives a quick overview of the Arcade, including the total number of games, categories, sessions and achievement unlocks.

More than just a list of games

Eggy Arcade keeps track of member activity across the Arcade so players build up their own history over time.

This includes things such as:
  • Completed Arcade sessions
  • Total play time
  • Different games played
  • Different categories explored
  • Active Arcade days
  • Current activity streak
  • Best activity streak
  • Achievement unlocks
  • Achievement points
  • Favourites
  • Recent games
  • Most played games
That activity feeds directly into the member's My Arcade area and the ranking system.

My Arcade

Each member gets their own Arcade profile area showing their progress across the site.

Rather than depending on third party games to report information back reliably, My Arcade focuses on activity that Eggy Arcade can verify itself.

Players can see things such as:
  • Arcade Points
  • Achievements unlocked
  • Achievement points
  • Unique games played
  • Categories explored
  • Active days
  • Current streak
  • Best streak
  • Completed sessions
  • Total play time
  • Favourites
  • Recent games
  • Most played games
  • Recent achievements
  • Upcoming achievement milestones
This means the member's Arcade profile continues building regardless of which provider supplied the games they play.

Arcade rankings

The Arcade ranking system is based on activity Eggy Arcade can reliably track itself.

Ranking sections include:
  • Overall
  • Achievements
  • Streaks
  • Exploration
  • Play time
Rankings can also be viewed across different periods such as this week, this month and all time where applicable.

Arcade Points are earned through meaningful Arcade activity such as achievements, exploring different games, discovering categories and remaining active over time.

The system is designed so simply reopening the same game repeatedly is not enough to dominate the rankings.

Achievements

Achievements give players additional goals throughout the Arcade.

They are based around activity that Eggy Arcade can verify itself.

Examples include:
  • Complete Arcade sessions
  • Play different games
  • Explore different categories
  • Build activity streaks
  • Reach total play time milestones
  • Play several different games in one day
  • Return across multiple days
  • Build a favourites collection
  • Complete game specific activity where supported
Achievement cards show live progress towards each target.

For example:

6 / 10 games

Once the requirement has been completed, progress is capped at the achievement target:

3 / 3 games

Players can filter achievements by unlocked and locked status, browse them by category and see their overall achievement progress.

Player permissions

Eggy Arcade uses native XenForo permissions so site owners can control how different user groups interact with it.

Permissions include:
  • Can play Arcade
  • Can earn achievements
  • Can record on leaderboards
This means a site owner can allow a group to browse the Arcade without letting them play, allow gameplay without achievement progress, or exclude a group from public Arcade rankings.

The checks are enforced by the Arcade itself rather than simply hiding buttons.

Flexible Arcade widgets

Eggy Arcade includes its own widget management area inside:

ACP → Eggy Arcade → Widgets

Site owners can decide which Arcade widgets are enabled and where they appear.

Widgets can be placed across different Arcade areas including:
  • Arcade homepage
  • Achievements sidebar
  • Rankings sidebar
  • My Arcade sidebar
  • Other supported Arcade areas
Available widget types include things such as:
  • Arcade overview
  • Popular games
  • New games
  • Featured games
  • Recently played games
  • Favourites
  • Achievement progress
  • Recent achievement unlocks
  • Arcade rankings
  • Categories
Each widget can be enabled or disabled individually, giving administrators control over how much information appears on each Arcade page.

They are built as XenForo widgets rather than using a completely separate layout system.

Game discovery

Large catalogues quickly become difficult to use if members cannot find anything.

Eggy Arcade keeps the library manageable through:
  • Search
  • Categories
  • Popular games
  • New games
  • Related games
  • Favourites
  • Recently played games
  • Incremental catalogue loading
Newly imported titles can automatically appear in the appropriate sections without the administrator having to reorganise the Arcade every time new games arrive.

Automatic game categories

When a game is imported, Eggy Arcade checks the category supplied by the provider.

If the category does not already exist, the Arcade can create it automatically.

For example, if a provider supplies:
  • Racing
  • Puzzle
  • Sports
  • Action
  • Adventure
and one of those categories does not yet exist, Eggy Arcade can create it during the import process.

This removes a lot of repetitive ACP work when importing larger catalogues.

Provider based importing

Supported game providers are handled through the Arcade importer in the ACP.

Depending on the provider, Eggy Arcade can import information including:
  • Game title
  • Description
  • Thumbnail
  • Provider information
  • Category
  • Launch URL
  • Orientation
  • Desktop/mobile availability
  • Other provider supplied metadata where available
Once imported, the game becomes a local Eggy Arcade catalogue entry rather than depending on the provider for the Arcade structure itself.

Scheduled imports

Administrators do not need to manually check providers every time they want new games.

Provider settings can be configured so Eggy Arcade periodically checks for new catalogue entries and imports them automatically.

That allows the available game library to continue growing with very little day to day administration.

Popular and newly added games

The Arcade can highlight what members are currently playing as well as recently imported games.

This gives active games more visibility while also making sure newly added titles do not immediately disappear into a large catalogue.

Game pages

Every imported game gets its own XenForo page.

Game pages include game information, the description, player controls and the Arcade player itself.

Members enter the game through a proper Play game state rather than immediately being dropped into the game.

Supported features include:
  • Responsive game player
  • Fullscreen mode
  • Exit Game Mode
  • Desktop/mobile availability
  • Favourites
  • Related games
  • Game information
  • Personal game activity
  • Game specific achievements where applicable
The player remains part of the XenForo Arcade experience rather than simply redirecting the member away from the community.

Built around XenForo

Eggy Arcade is designed to feel like part of the forum rather than a separate website bolted onto it.

Members use their existing XenForo accounts and their Arcade activity is tied to the same community identity they already use around the site.

The add-on uses XenForo permissions, widgets, styling, ACP navigation and user data rather than replacing those systems with an unrelated framework.

Third party game advertising

Games supplied through external distribution networks may contain advertising during gameplay.

Those adverts are delivered by the individual game provider or distributor as part of their own distribution system.

They are not Eggy Arcade advertisements and Eggy Arcade does not inject or control them.

Site owners should keep this in mind when choosing which providers and games they want to make available.

Eggy Arcade releases September 30th

The live Arcade will continue being used and tested before release:

That was quick 😄
Most of the logic is already in place from previous projects like achievements and leaderboards. The simple part was widgets and game distribution imports :-)

Oh. Nice work. I built my own arcade, but I'll keep an eye on this development :)
