What “IRC connection timed out” means

A timeout means Eggy BNC tried to reach the remote IRC server, but the connection did not complete in time.

Possible causes

• remote IRC server is down or overloaded
• wrong hostname
• wrong port
• firewall or routing problem
• network silently drops hosted/BNC connections
• SSL/TLS mismatch

What to test

Check the network's official server list. Try another official server in the same network if available. Verify whether the port is plain or SSL/TLS.

Client side or network side?

If your IRC client connects to bnc.eggy.net +5000 successfully, the timeout is probably between Eggy BNC and the remote IRC network.

If your IRC client cannot connect to bnc.eggy.net +5000 at all, that is a different issue.

Include the network name, server, port, SSL setting, and approximate time. If the network has public server documentation, include the link or exact server name you used.
