Eggy Smart Feed – Personalized For You Feed​

Eggy Smart Feed adds a personalised “For You” discovery feed to XenForo, ranking discussions from the forums each member can already access using their interests, activity, follows and explicit feedback.

Instead of replacing XenForo’s existing What’s New system, Smart Feed works alongside it and provides an additional discovery layer designed to help members find relevant discussions more quickly.

The ranking engine is deterministic and runs entirely within XenForo. No external AI service or API is required.

Personalised For You feed​

Smart Feed scores recent, viewable discussions using configurable signals including:

• Thread recency
• Watched forums
• Followed thread authors
• Recently visited forums
• Threads the member has participated in
• Threads the member has reacted to
• More Like This and Less Like This feedback
• Feedback from other threads in the same foru
• Member selected interests
• Prioritised forums
• Active Smart Feed profiles
• Reply and view activity for trending discussions
• Administrator configured Always Include rules

Results respect normal XenForo thread and forum visibility.

Administrators can configure the maximum thread age, number of candidate discussions evaluated and number of recommendations returned.

Recommendation explanations​

When enabled, Smart Feed shows members a concise reason for individual recommendations.

Depending on the discussion, reasons can include:

• Community recommendation
• Watched forum
• Followed member
• Recently visited
• You participated
• You reacted
• Based on your feedback
• Based on similar feedback
• Prioritised forum
• Matches your interests
• Matches your feed profile
• Trending in your community

This gives members some context for why a discussion appeared in their feed.

More Like This and Less Like This​

Members with permission can give direct feedback on recommendations.

More Like This positively influences the discussion and related forum scoring.

Less Like This applies a negative ranking signal.

Feedback is saved per member and used by the ranking engine on future Smart Feed requests.

The feature can be disabled globally or controlled through XenForo user group permissions.

Forum prioritisation and muting​

Members can customise Smart Feed without changing their normal XenForo forum access.

They can:

• Prioritise individual forums
• Mute individual forums from Smart Feed
• Manage their prioritised and muted forums from Smart Feed Preferences

A muted forum remains accessible normally throughout XenForo. It is only removed from Smart Feed recommendations.

Administrators can also decide whether a member’s explicit mute should override an administrator configured Always Include rule.

Hide members from Smart Feed​

Members can hide another member’s discussions specifically from Smart Feed.

This is separate from XenForo Ignore.

Hidden members can be reviewed from Smart Feed Preferences and restored at any time using Show again.

Interest presets​

Administrators can create reusable interest presets and map each preset to one or more forums.

Each interest preset supports:

• Title
• Description
• Display order
• Forum assignments
• Active/inactive status
• Registration availability

Members can select the interests relevant to them and the mapped forums receive additional ranking weight.

Registration interests​

Smart Feed interests can optionally be included during XenForo registration.

Administrators can choose:

• Disabled
• Optional
• Required

Registration enabled interest presets are supported on both the standard XenForo registration flow and connected account registration.

When interests are required, registration cannot complete without at least one valid selection.

Selected interests are saved directly to the new member’s Smart Feed preferences.

Interest onboarding​

Smart Feed can present an onboarding prompt to members who have not yet configured their interests.

Members are taken to Smart Feed Preferences where they can select interests and configure their feed.

If the administrator has configured interests as required, Smart Feed can require the member to complete the relevant interest selection before using the personalised feed.

Smart Feed profiles​

Members can create reusable forum focused feed profiles.

Each profile contains:

• A custom profile name
• Display order
• Selected forums

Profiles appear above the For You feed and can be selected to give their chosen forums additional ranking weight.

Administrators can configure the maximum number of profiles each member may create, from 1 to 20.

Catch Me Up​

Catch Me Up creates a personalised return summary using discussions updated since the member’s relevant previous activity or Catch Me Up point.

Results are organised into:

• Threads you participated in
• From forums and interests you follow
• New discussions you may like
• Top discussions for you

Members can manually use Mark caught up to update their Catch Me Up point.

Administrators can configure the fallback lookback period and maximum number of Catch Me Up results.

Administrator content rules​

Smart Feed includes forum level content controls in the Admin CP.

Administrators can configure forums as:

• Always Include
  Eligible discussions receive a strong recommendation boost.
• Excluded from recommendations
  Threads remain accessible normally but do not appear in Smart Feed recommendations.
• Excluded from behavioural learning
  Activity in these forums does not contribute recently visited, participation or reaction based learning signals.

A forum can only use one of these content rules at a time.

Minimum content thresholds​

Administrators can optionally require normal recommendations to meet:

• A minimum reply count
• A minimum total post reaction score

Always Include forums are exempt from these thresholds.

Configurable ranking weights​

The weighting of the recommendation engine can be adjusted from the Admin CP.

Separate weights are available for:

• Recency
• Watched forum
• Followed author
• Recently visited forum
• Participated thread
• Reacted thread
• More Like This
• Less Like This penalty
• Trending activity
• Prioritised forum
• Selected interest

This allows administrators to control which signals have more influence without modifying code.

Behavioural learning controls​

Administrators can configure a minimum account age before implicit behavioural signals begin influencing recommendations.

Until that age is reached, signals such as recent forum activity, participation and reactions are ignored.

Explicitly selected interests remain available immediately.

Optional guest feed​

Smart Feed can optionally be made available to guests.

Because guests have no member specific history, their feed is based on eligible content, recency, activity and administrator content rules rather than personal member behaviour.

Guest Smart Feed access is disabled by default.

What’s New integration​

Smart Feed integrates with XenForo’s existing What’s New system.

Administrators can choose the default What’s New destination from:

• For You
• Latest
• Unread
• Following
• XenForo native overview

Smart Feed also provides convenient navigation between supported discovery views including Native What’s New, Latest, Unread, Following, Catch Me Up and Personalise Feed.

Latest and Unread shortcuts can be disabled if they are not wanted.

Configurable primary navigation​

Smart Feed can have its own XenForo primary navigation entry.

Administrators can control:

• Whether the navigation item is enabled
• Navigation label
• Public Smart Feed path
• Display order
• Registered members only visibility
• Whether the Smart Feed navigation item remains highlighted while browsing Smart Feed

The public path can be changed to a custom route segment such as for-you, discover or my-feed while preserving the internal Smart Feed route.

User group permissions​

Smart Feed uses XenForo’s native permission system.

Separate permissions are provided for:

• View Smart Feed
• Use Catch Me Up
• Manage interests
• Submit recommendation feedback
• Prioritise and mute forums
• Hide members from Smart Feed
• Use Smart Feed profiles

This allows individual features to be granted or restricted by user group.

Admin CP​

Eggy Smart Feed includes its own Admin CP section with:

• Overview dashboard
• Smart Feed Options
• Feature controls
• Interest Presets
• Content Rules
• Analytics
• Permission overview

The overview provides current statistics including selected interest users, active presets, saved profiles, current forum mutes and priorities, saved feedback choices and recent For You/Catch Me Up views.

Smart Feed analytics​

The Admin CP includes activity reporting for the previous 30 days, including:

• For You views
• Catch Me Up views
• Recommended thread opens
• Recommendation click through rate
• More Like This actions
• Less Like This actions
• Forum mute actions
• Forum prioritisation actions
• Member hide actions
• Most muted forums
• Most prioritised forums
• Most selected interests

Analytics event retention is configurable from 7 to 730 days and old events are automatically pruned.

Recommendation click tracking​

Smart Feed distinguishes recommendation clicks from ordinary thread opens.

Each rendered recommendation view receives a temporary session token containing the discussions displayed in that feed. A qualifying recommendation click is counted only once for that feed view and must correspond to a thread that was actually presented.

This is used for the recommendation click through rate shown in the Admin CP.

Theme aware frontend​

Smart Feed uses XenForo style properties rather than a hardcoded product colour scheme.

Its frontend includes:

• Author avatars
• Thread titles and unread state
• Forum and author metadata
• Recommendation reason indicators
• Latest activity time
• Reply and view counts
• Recommendation feedback controls
• Contextual action menus
• Responsive Smart Feed navigation
• Responsive member preference screens

This allows the add on to inherit the appearance of the active XenForo style.

Data cleanup​

Smart Feed listens for deleted XenForo users, threads and nodes and removes related Smart Feed data where applicable.

This includes stored interests, profiles, forum states, hidden-member records, feedback, analytics references and content rule mappings.

Uninstall also removes the Smart Feed owned database tables and its custom route filter.
