Changing your vhost

A vhost controls the approved Eggy hostname or outbound address your IRC connection uses when Eggy BNC connects to a remote IRC network.

IRC identity is often shown like this:

nick!ident@host

The host part may show an Eggy BNC vhost, for example:

[email protected]

What a vhost can help with

Changing vhost can help when:

• you want a different approved Eggy hostname shown on IRC
• support asks you to test another host
• one channel or network behaves differently with a different host
• you want a cleaner visible hostmask within the approved choices

What it cannot do

A vhost does not bypass rules. It does not guarantee channel access. Networks and channels can ban or restrict by nickname, ident, host, IP range, services account, Real Name/GECOS, or broad BNC/VPS policy.

If a channel has a broad ban against hosted users, changing vhost may not solve it.

When it applies

A vhost usually applies when the IRC network reconnects. If you are already connected, the previous host may remain visible until that network connection cycles.

A reconnect of your own user-managed network is not a global BNC restart. It should affect only your network connection.

Best practice

Change one identity setting at a time. If you change vhost, Real Name, nickname, and server settings together, it becomes difficult to know which change caused the result.

If you need support, include your network name, channel name, current visible hostmask, and exact error text.
